Review EVOKED “Immoral Arts” (EP)

German death metal squad Evoked will release a new EP with “Immoral Arts”. The trio launched their first demo 10 years ago and presented a full-length debut in 2019 with “Ravenous Compulsion”. “Immoral Arts” is now the next strike of this death metal force from North Rhine-Westphalia.

The latest effort starts with the title track and what we get is a wild and sinister song that doesn’t shy away from stronger grooving parts. Especially the middle part of “Immoral Arts” is a moment for collective headbanging.

“From the Distance” is the next blast and the great thing about this release is the non-conformity. There is no lurking for commercial success. It is the pure passion for extreme metal that imbues every note with immense heaviness. At the same time, Evoked add cleverly placed breaks to their musical outburst, making the songs much more engaging than just keeping the foot on the pedal.

“A Nameless Grave” is a song that actually builds on this approach in the first half before all hell breaks loose in the second half of this headbanger. Despite being a death metal band, there are also some wild thrash moments captured in these five songs; thrash metal as we know it from the raging early days. In a way, it is the spirit of the early 80’s with its untamed hunger for metal that is transported through the songs on this EP.

Evoked has a wild and fierce EP in the starting blocks and anyone who likes hellish death metal with some thrash metal references should give this release a chance.
