SiX By SiX are three – three musicians with very solid backgrounds in rock music. Ian Crichton (Saga), Nigel Glockler (Saxon) and Robert Berry (3.2). After releasing a debut album in 2022, the guys went back into the studio to record their second album called ‘Beyond Shadowland’.
The roots of the band/project go back a few years. Some of you may know GTR, which was the moniker for a collaboration of Glockler and Berry with Yes guitarist Steve Howe. And there is a connection between Glockler and Crichton based on their work for Asia. These connections and a shared passion for progressive music are the foundation of SiX By SiX.
In a way, the album combines the different musical backgrounds in a great fashion, resulting in songs that are all layered and take a while to blossom. Saga guitarist Ian Crichton brings the filigree prog riffs to the plate and, what a surprise, there is sometimes a bit of Saga vibes present. Next to it is the hard-hitting drumming of Nigel Glockler, who provides the heartbeat for this amazing release. Together with the vocals, bass and keyboard sounds of Robert Berry, the album shows a group of veterans having fun with what they are doing. In a different environment than the musical motherships, unfettered creativity is the real driving force behind each of the eleven songs on this release.
SiX By SiX create a musical kaleidoscope with many aspects, all united by a progressive approach to music. From the heavy roaring “Arms of a Word” to the pounding “Titans” and the mighty “Spectre,” the songs on “Beyond Shadowland” are layered prog-rockers that have enough catchiness to unfold their beauty right away. And if you are looking for a song that combines it all, listen to “One Step”.
“Beyond Shadowland” is a passionate album made by musicians who obviously enjoy the creative freedom. They bring all their talent and experience to the table, resulting in stunning and timeless prog rockers.
