Dvne hail from Edinburgh, Scotland, and their music is certainly a different ballgame than traditional bagpipe sounds, nor is it the sound of the Highlands that forms the basis for these 10 songs. Dvne focus on post-metal and sludge, which they refine with a progressive touch.
Three years ago the band released their second album “Etemen Ænka” and now “Voidkind” offers new music from the Scottish post metal outfit. If you haven’t heard a song from the band yet, I can recommend ‘Reliquary’. The seven-minute milestone features the full range of Dvne’s sound. The furious and heavy moments are present and define the first half of the song. The calm and very reflective middle part provides a great counterpart to the heavy pounding moment before the massive riff power takes over again. Also worth mentioning is the wide range of vocals. Clean and emotional up to wild screams, this is the spectrum listeners are confronted with and it gives Dvne an enormous amount of possibilities when creating their songs. There’s no standardized approach where every song follows a similar pattern. The band certainly builds on their own musical vision, which still gives them a lot of space to create a versatile and intriguing album.
It also allows Dvne to write songs that come with a running time, mostly far beyond the four-minute mark. Already song number two, ‘Eleonors’, with its almost nine minutes is a statement at the beginning of the album. The very rhythmic and powerful song is very entertaining and comes with a few twists, some predictable and some more surprising. Regardless of whether it is one or the other, it adds to the very positive appeal of an album that can also score points for its very dense sound. What reaches your ears is a massive sound construct with mighty riff eruptions, while the gentle parts of calmness give you a moment to breathe before the next outburst follows rather quickly.
‘Voidkind’ is an album that carries an exciting level of intensity. It is an album that grabs you and slowly takes control. You may want to hit the pause button now and then, but it is the curiosity that keeps you going. You will be rewarded with great songs and it will be exciting to follow the next steps of this interesting band from Scotland.
