Review THE QUILL ‘Wheel of Illusion’

The story of The Quill started in the early 90’s and although the band is very present, it is always a bit surprising how long the guys are around. With ‘Wheel of Illusion’ the 11th album was released a few weeks ago and it shows once again why the Swedes are such a constant in the world of hard rock music.

Nine songs are offered on the new studio album and The Quill remain true to themselves and their sound. There is no reason to change the musical trademarks as their formula is a guarantee for well done hard rock.

Rooted in 70’s rock and classic rock, the band once again comes up with great songs, starting with the title track. While staying true to their sound, there is also a surprising factor woven into the opener. It is a doomy Sabbathian riff that kicks off the album and the vocal lines have a bit of an Ozzy vibe.

The 70’s rock spirit comes alive with ‘Rainmaker’. The song starts quietly and slowly builds up to a roaring rocker. What can also be heard on the album are some metal influences, reminiscent of the early days of NWoBHM. The lively ‘Elephant Head’ is a song that belongs to this category.

With ‘Hawk Hounds’ the band adds a psychedelic aspect to the mix, and it is a thunderous riff that introduces ‘Sweet Mass Confusion’. The track impresses the first time you hear it. Mainly because of the riff. It takes a while though before it starts to grow in general.

‘Wild Mustang’ is the last track on the album and the finish line is in sight. Slower paced and with a hypnotic beat the song is very groove based. The title might suggest wild and furious mustangs out on the prairie, but the music reflects the opposite. Still a cool song and I just expected something else based on the title.

The Quill released a great album with ‘Earthrise’ and the new release can easily compete. ‘Wheel of Illusion’ may be a bit less heavy than the previous studio album, but it delivers a greater mix of songs that cover everything from loud to mellow, from heavy to gentle. ‘Wheel of Illusion’ – another great effort from The Quill.
