Quebec, Canada is known for Poutine; a rather peculiar but also delicious mix of French fries, thick beef gravy and cheese. Besides this rather special dish, the city in Canada’s French speaking part has also a vibrant music scene. One of the bands, having their homebase in Quebec is Tonnerre which explains the French moniker and album title.
‘La nuit sauvage’ is the first album the band launches and it is a crushing rock album that will hit the shelves these days. The title track kicks things off and a certain connection to the sound of AC/DC can’t be denied. Blues-soaked rock is what the opener has to offer and although Tonnerre is inspired by AC/DC but also Blue Öyster Cult, there is still enough own identity and heartbeat embedded which makes this debut album stand out from other releases.
The special vibe of Tonnerre’s music also has to do with Annick, the singer of the Canadian five-piece. She delivers a great performance. Melodic and at the same time equipped with the right level of smokiness she fits perfect to the sound of Tonnerre.
‘La nuit sauvage’ is the soundtrack for a wild night which has to do with much blood, sweat and tears. It is the energy each songs spreads among listeners that fascinates, and it is impossible to stand still while songs like ‘Les enfants de la nuit’ roars out of the speakers. The same goes for the sharp and crisp ‘L’esprit de la forêt’.
‘La nuit suavage’ is a very well-crafted rock album. It’s not the uniqueness that makes this longplayer special. It is the joyfulness the Canadians go to work and the infectious, blues-driven rock that provides a good time. And what else do we need than a good time, a cold beer and powerful music after having enjoyed some Poutine.
