Review ZOMBI ‘Direct Inject’

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based rock duo Zombi isn’t a new outfit. Steve Moore and Anthony Paterra started Zombi already in 2001 and release the debut album ‘Cosmos’ in 2004.

Zombi, that means very well-crafted instrumental music that is driven by synth, bass and drums. These are also the mean assets for the newest record called ‘Direct Inject’. The duo recorded nine songs of which the title track acts as an introduction to these 42 minutes of thrilling music.

The atmosphere of ‘Direct Inject’ is a dark and gloomy one. It is a dystopian journey through the world of sounds. This longplayer has the character of a soundtrack and there are more than once references to the iconic composers like John Carpenter. While listening to this record I had to think several times of the great music that gives ‘Escape From New York’ its doomsday atmosphere.

Compared to these heavy-hearted moments that album also features with ‘Sessuale II’ and interlude-like composition that is driven by the sound of the saxophone, being the main ingredient for this peaceful and very atmospheric moment. These calmer and emotional moments are swept away by the darkened heaviness of songs like ‘The Post-Atomic Horror’. The title already indicates that we don’t talk about a love song in this context. ‘The Post-Atomic Horror’ is more of a musical interpretation of a post-atomic wasteland with all its live-threatening inhospitality.

Zombi’s music reflects inspiration and innovation. Inspired by some greats of synth rock the duo developed an own sound that captivates through emotions, generated by these nine tracks. ‘Direct Injection’ is the opposite of a massive riff attack and at the same time contains enough heaviness for rock and metal fans.
