Review WHOM GODS DESTROY ‘Insanium’

Whom Gods Destroy is a new group with well-known protagonists. Derek Sherinian and Ron ‘Bumblefoot’ Thal are part of this outfit and with Dino Jelusick, a talented singer takes over the vocal parts, while Yas Nomura and Bruno Valverde form the rhythm section of Whom Gods Destroy.

Sherinian and Thal initiated the group, both having a common history with Sons Of Apollo and Whom Gods Destroy is a new path the two decided to walk on. In 2020, the two began working on songs and singer Dino Jelusick joined quickly. According to Sherinian, the influences for the sound of Whom Gods Destroy are wide, ranging from Muse to Meshuggah to Led Zeppelin. This unusual blend works extremely well, resulting in heavy and progressive music. ongs like ‘Over Again’ are furious moments of metal, and the multi-layered approach is evident. Undoubtedly, Meshuggah’s complexity influenced the song, yet each track has a catchy appeal. The melodic vocal lines and Jelusick’s harsh rock ‘n’ roll voice make it easy to find a way into the songs.

While Whom Gods Destroy showcases their heavy approach with songs like ‘Over Again,’ it is the calmer ‘Find My Way Back’ that brings the rocking inspiration to the plate. This anthemic song is a soulful highlight of the album. Starting calmly, the tune gradually builds up to a powerful half-ballad that goes beyond standards.

The brutal power of the riff returns with ‘Crucifier’, with Thal’s guitar playing an important role. In addition to musical brutality, complexity also returns, providing a counterpart to the gentle ‘Find my Way Back’. Navigating between these poles is what provides excitement for the album, and therefore it is not surprising that the Zeppelin-influenced ‘Keeper of the Gate’ is next.

‘Insanium’ is a well-crafted and passionate record created by talented musicians with a great sense for songwriting. The album represents versatility, and Whom Gods Destroy successfully blend progressive sounds into a musical context that immerses the listener from the first spin.
