Myrath have been around since 2006 after five years of making music as Xtazy. With a total of five albums, the guys from Tunisia have already achieved a lot and these days there will be a new longplayer with ‘Karma’.
‘Karma’ was originally supposed to be released earlier, but the release has been postponed and on 8 March the time has finally come and fans of progressive metal sounds will already be excited.
The band’s latest album contains eleven songs and, as with their previous albums, the guys have once again given free rein to their mix of progressive metal and catchy melodies. ‘Karma’ is a multi-layered album on which the guys also rely on bombastic elements such as on ‘Words are Failing’.
The album continues with the throbbing ‘Candles Cry’, a song with a very accomplished and multi-layered chorus. The use of oriental sounds is nothing new for Myrath as it is one of the band’s trademarks. These are particularly evident in ‘Wheel of Time’, but I also have the feeling that the musical elements have diminished. Rather, they enrich the metallic structures and provide variety which, however, does not become the leitmotif of a song. Just listen to ‘Temple Walls’, for example. Here, the band’s musical roots come to the fore again and again, while the song itself is a complex metal track.
Things get heavier with ‘Heroes’, one of the songs that has already been released as a single. Here, powerful riffs are used to add heaviness, while the very melodic vocal lines form a counterpart. In terms of content, the song is about self-confidence and trust, two timeless themes.
Last but not least, there is the dramatic and rather cinematic ‘Carry On’, which sets a good final statement, but is also equipped with a lot of pathos.
In conclusion, it can be said that Myrath continue on ‘Karma’ their musical journey through the world of metal and oriental sounds. The guys remain true to their basic principles and manage to develop further within the framework they have set themselves. In addition, Myrath manage to create entertaining songs and it is the complexity that always provides surprises. At the same time, however, it has to be said that ‘Karma’ doesn’t leave much of a long-lasting impact and after the last song has faded away, you may have had a good time, but you won’t remember any particular wow moment.
