Review MORTA SKULD ‘Creation Undone’

Since their return in 2012, the Milwaukee-based death metal band Morta Skuld has released two thrilling albums, with the next one hitting the shelves soon. ‘Creation Undone’ is a massive blast from Wisconsin, showcasing old-school death metal at its best.

Morta Skuld, driven by founding member Dave Gregor and supported by Eric House, Scott Willecke, and John Hill, has created one of the best albums of their career. Fans of extreme metal got a taste of what to expect when the band released their first single, ‘We Rise We Fall’. The song, which is also the opener of the new album, perfectly sets the tone with its brutal death metal sound that encompasses all the trademarks of the band and genre. The drum parts are machinegun-like, the growls are guttural, and the riffs are massive.

Morta Skuld’s music is fast-paced and their recordings are full of raging death metal songs. However, the four-piece band does not solely rely on high tempo to create their devilish magic. Instead, they combine furious parts with a great sense of hooks, as demonstrated in songs like the well-crafted ‘Painful Conflict’ and the throbbing ‘Soul Piercing Sorrow’. The album ‘Self Destructive Emotions’ can be best described as massive. The song captivates listeners with its density, and the breaks provide an extra thrill to this deadly metal anthem.

Marta Skuld manages to reflect their trademarks while adding versatility to their songs. Operating within a certain framework, each of the tunes has a unique twist. This allows listeners to easily cruise through the ten songs. After the first round, no one is hesitant to press the ‘Start’ button again. ‘Creation Undone’ is a delight for old-school death metal fans and a neck-breaking album for those with less trained neck muscles.
