Bavarian thrash metal maniacs Dust Bolt launch their new album called ‘Sound & Fury’. What stands out first is the artwork of the newest longplayer. Young and wild, that’s what the band stands for and that is what the artwork represents. Yet kept in black & white and with solely the band in the front cover, ‘Sound & Fury’ create curiosity and there is the question, if the sound changed too.
The 12-song featuring tracklist represents the strength of the four Bavarians. Mighty thrash metal is what the new record contains while the band also widens their musical approach. There is the grooving ‘I Witness’ which a per excellence headbanger and there is the massive ‘New Flame’, handing over the calm beginning of ‘Burning Pieces’. But no worries, ‘Broken Pieces’ doesn’t stay in the calmer mode. In fact, we are listening at a modern echoing metal track with a captivating groove that is also a main contributor to the title track. The name-giver for the album is a dark and moderate paced metal song with a rather melodic chorus.
These songs show the diversity of ‘Sound & Fury’, an overarching theme to which the funky opening of ‘Love & Reality’ contributes as well. The song in its entirety is a smashing metal delight that comes with a very solid riff.
What is remarkable too is the dense sound of the album. There is a lot of power embedded in each of the recorded songs. Lenny Breuss and Ferdinand Dankesreiter at the helm did a great job in providing these twelve songs with the right level of firepower.
‘Bluedeep’ is an unexpected interlude, built on samples while it is the smashing force of ‘Disco Nection’ that offers a weird but great mix of darkened metal and an underlying disco vibe that isn’t more than a sprinkle to this exciting track. ‘Disco-Nection’ is certainly the most danceable track on the album.
Modern and massive, that is ‘You Make Me Feel (Nothing)’ before ‘Feel the Storm’ is more than just a breeze. The closing chapter of this release is interesting too. ‘Little Stone’ is a ballad-like closer with a melancholic vibe.
Dust Bolt remain to their roots but also widen their musical approach. As on the artwork, there is a not of dynamic when it comes to thee twelve songs and while the trashing tunes mirror the roots of the band it’s songs like the title track and also ‘Little Stoner’ that shows a wider approach. It seems like Dust Bolt experimenting a bit with their musical range and it is exciting to follow the further direction of the four Bavarians. ‘Sound & Fury’ though is a great album that shows with its versatility the potential of this band.
