Green Day release with ‘Saviors’ their newest workpiece and it is a good one. The band, that started in 1987 as Sweet Children, worked four years on their newest release and what blasts out of the speakers showcases a band that goes strong and acts with full force.
Always commercially successful, Green Day had some excellent releases and ‘Saviors’ connects to those. It seems like the turbulent current times inspired Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt und Tré Cool to create straight-forward punk rock again. It seems like the ‘Father of all Motherf***ers’ days being far away again. Energetic and equipped with a good level of versatility, Green Day start rebellious into the album with ‘The American Dream is Killing Me’. The heavy pounding opener features the typical shout-along chorus while the melodic aspect of the song captivates immediately.
Compared to some of the previous releases ‘Saviors’ bloom while listening to the songs for the first time which also goes for the well-resounding ‘Look Ma, No Brains!’. The positive impression continues with ‘Bobby Sox’ and one thing is for sure after having listened to the first three songs – Green Day is back.
Green Day aren’t shy of calmer sings either. ‘Goodnight Adrenaline’ and the closing ‘Fancy Sauce’ represent these calmer and more atmospheric moments without losing the connection to the punk roots. To not get these moments too extended, the trio put upbeat songs like ‘1981’ on the tracklist, an electrifying tune on the album and a great punk rock anthem too. In general, there are more up-tempo songs on the album which underlines the recovered spirit and fury in great fashion.
‘Coma City’ and also the moderate paced ‘Corvette Summer’, all the songs are the best Green Day released since the early 2000th. The rocking momentum comes to surface with ‘Suzie Chaptick’, representing again the range of Green Day’s sound without feeling strange or sounding disconnected. ‘Saviors’ features tunes, that are 100% Green Day from start to finish.
‘Saviors’ is the glorious return of Green Day, a band that was always present and returns to their roots with their 14th studio album. ‘Saviors’ is a very positive surprise of the rather new 2024 and we can already look forward to the live shows in Europe/UK.
