Snow and ice – Hamburg does its best to welcome Audrey Horne with a best possible Bergen-like winter atmosphere. Regardless of the winterly conditions in Germany’s north, the Norwegians made it in time to Hamburg where a show at the legendary LOGO is scheduled. Fans had no problems to get to the venue too, regardless of snow and a football derby in town. So, everything is in place at 21:00 to start a rock’n’roll party the Scandinavian style. The Hamburg-show is the first one of nine planned gigs of the band and tonight it is Audrey Horne only. There is no support act or special guest which means that the Norwegians start right away into their set with a new song called ‘Ashes to Ashes’. Taken from the band latest studio album ‘Devil’s Bell’ the opening of the show can’t be much better as the crowd immediately turns the switch and gets into the party mode. The grooving ‘Break Out’ is next before we take a step back in time to the ‘Pure Heavy’ album. The Thin Lizzy inspired ‘Out of the City’ is a welcomed moment which is appreciated by fans.
As the LOGO isn’t a big club and since the show was almost sold-out, the temperature in the room rises minute by minute and it’s more like being in a sauna which also has to do with the great songs the band fires into the crowd.
The core of tonight’s set are the latest four albums while songs from ‘Le Fol’ and also the band’s debut didn’t make on the setlist . Even ‘Audrey Horne’ is represented by just one song – the soulful moment of the night called ‘Sail Away’ which opens the encore section.
As it is the ‘Devil’s Bell’-tour, the album contributes with four songs to tonight’s rock’n’roll party. The pushing ‘Animal’ is one of the songs, equipped with a chorus that invites for a sing-along.
Audrey Horne is a band that needs a close contact to their fans. Now, the LOGO is a venue with a stage that allows this connection and since the stage is just a step elevated it is easy for musicians to take a moment in the crowed. The Norwegian powerhouse makes immediate use of this opportunity with singer Toschie performing ‘Pretty Little Sunshine’ in the middle of the crowd which leads to “Audrey Horne”-chants that fill the room. During ‘Return to the Grave’ Arve Isdal and Thomas Tofthagen unleash their riff power surrounded by fans and during the encore, room and stage unites in a way again.
The further we get into this 90-minute set, the more hits blast out of the speakers. ‘This is War’, ‘Redemption Blues’ and the anthemic ‘Waiting for the Night’ are the pure moment of dirty rock preformed in the sweaty atmosphere of a small venue.
Audrey Horne never disappoint, neither on a studio album nor live on stage. One might ask the question why the five-piece plays the smaller clubs but the ones that witnessed tonight’s show can agree that is the intimate vibe of such a sticky and beer-soaked club show that creates a great scenery for an electric moment. Great band, great show, great start into the weekend.
