Review SIGIR ‘Rainmaker’

‘Rainmaker’ is the debut album of a rising new band, hailing from Finland. Sigir, that is the name of the outfit that started in 2019 in Vesanto. What started with a great ambition got slowed down by the upcoming pandemic, but willpower and dedication helped the guys to go through this rough patch.

After having launched to singles the full-length album arrived at the record stores and fans of melodic death metal should have the Finns on their radar. Thinking not only but also about bands like Amorphis, melodic death metal has a history in Finland and Sigir are now a part of it.

The guys don’t reinvent the genre, which was certainly also not the ambition. Instead, the make us of the genre ingredients and bring them together in good fashion. Melodic moments turn into blasting riff assault like in the title track that also opens the album.

But also, calmer moments and some Finnish melancholy swings with songs like ‘Depraved’. The atmospheric beginning and the moderate pace help the song to become an anthemic moment on ‘Rainmaker’.

Dramatic is also a way to describe ‘From Time to Eternity’ where you feel as if you are exposed to the Finnish forces of nature. The closing ‘Enter’ plays in the same league but is kept in a faster pace but also doesn’t shy away from an atmospheric middle section; a peaceful moment that ends with a bloodcurdling scream.

‘Rainmaker’ is a well-crafted debut album. This record can take the hearts of fans of melodic death metal by storm as the band shows their potential. And after the last notes of ‘Rainmaker’ have faded away, what remains is the rain lashing against the window panes that may have been evoked by ‘Rainmaker’.
