Poland’s sludge/doom band Dopelord have a new album in the pipeline. ‘Songs for Satan’ is the promising title of the album which pays tribute to the lord of the underworld with a total of seven songs.
‘Songs for Satan’ is the fifth album of the four-piece and follows up the ‘Sign of the Devil’ released in 2020.
After the call of the owl starts the album, it is a short intro, heavy riffs find their way through the darkness. ‘Night of the Witch’ is the first song where the band’s trademarks come into play. With almost mesmerizing repetitions, the song crushes everything that gets in its way. Already released as a single in advance, ‘Night of the Witch’ offers a good idea of what is to come.
The following ‘The Chose One’ comes at you with fierceness and develops its own power with a psychedelic vibe. Pulsating yet anchored in slo-mo riffs is ‘One Billion Skulls’ and thunderous riffs prevail on ‘Evil Spell’ as well.
On ‘Songs for Satan’ Dopelord do not deviate a millimeter from their musical foundations, but groove through almost 40 minutes of doom metal which mirrors the power of the snail’s pace. The fact that the vocals on ‘Worms’ sound even more devilish is a welcome variation that fits exactly into the overall concept.
At the end Dopelord resumes the initial basic pattern with ‘Return of the Night of the Witch’, but in a quiet way that reminds more of an outro than a song.
Dopelord manage with their new album to express the power of doom metal in a very good fashion. Heavy and with the impact of a bulldozer, the four-piece rocks its way through this album and you simply can’t resist being fascinated by the charisma of the tracks.
