Review BASTIBASTI ‚Spiral Tapes I‘ – EP

Callejon belong to the most successful German metalcore bands. There albums enter the German charts on a regular base and their latest longplayer ‚Eternia‘ made it into the Top 10. Singer of the band is Bastian Sobtzick whose ceative flow is wider than Callejon only. In his role as creative director Sobtzick signs responsible artworks and concepts for some known artists.

With BastiBasti the singer started a new project. ‚Spiral Tapes I‘ is the first EP Sobtzick releases as a solo artist and although some parallels to the musical mothership are apparent, the new material is heading for another direction.

The EP contains five songs and what strings them together is a dark and partly dystopian vibe. The lyrics are kept in German and the base of each of the songs are samples and synth-layers. Songs like ‚Bodyhorror‘ manifest the approach very well and the same goes for the following ‚Kaputter‘.

The songs with a furious approach are opening and closing the release. Here it‘s less the harsh guitars that create the aggressiveness. It‘s the vocals and the screams that create the intensity, especially when you listen to ‚Videokill‘.

BastiBasti stand for a contemporary sound that bridges modern synth sounds with the outbursts of metalcore. It‘s an interesting EP beyond the denim & leather sounds.

Rating: 7 out of 10.
