Review GRAYWOLF ‘Graywolf’

Graywolf is a band hailing from Switzerland. With savvy musicians on board, having played for bands like Celtic Frost, Emerald and Pure Inc., the quintet has enough firepower and experience to create an album that rocks; and the self-titled debut really rocks.

With the background of the involved musicians the assumption regarding sound of Graywolf could be metallic and hard. This is not exactly what you get with this debut. ‘Graywolf’ features elven songs that are deeply rooted in classic rock and hard rock. In the forefront are well-crafted melodies as well as a good level of hardness, which makes songs like ‘We’ll Bring You Down’ to little ear-pleasers. Always in the three-minute song framing the band knows how to unleash some rock power. Songs like the pounding ‘Hey Man’ and the following ‘Get Out Alive’, with its driving bass, spread a good vibe right away and the same goes for ‘After Midnight’ which will unfold its full potential probably during live shows.

That Graywolf isn’t shy of an acoustic guitar is what the guys show during the emotional ‘All We Want is Everything’. The half-acoustic tune is touching. With ‘I’m Losing You’ the mandatory ballad finds a spot on the tracklist too and honestly, I feel a hit reminded of bands like Nickelback, which, in this context isn’t meant as negative as it could be interpreted since Graywolf add a few more edges to this ballad.

‘Graywolf’ is a well-done debut album, created by guys who know how things work on the rock business. Still there is enough authenticity embedded to make to album to much more than a planned treat for success. Passion meets experience, that is what this longplayer mirrors and listening to the result of the effort is an entertaining way to spend 36 minutes.
