It’s always a tricky thing with supergroups. Sometimes they are designed on the drawing board and have mainly a commercial aspect. Sometimes, however, it opens up the possibility for the musicians involved to express themselves musically outside the confines of the established mother ship.

When Alice Cooper, Joe Perry and Johnny Depp decided to start with Hollywood Vampires, surely fun and good rock music was in the center of attention. However, the fact that this collaboration turned out to be commercially interesting is more a logical side effect than the ambition itself.

The journey started with the self-titled debut album in 2015, which was filled with cover versions of hits from the rocking 70’s. The album achieved international chart success, which is not surprising. Four years later, Hollywood Vampires returned. They presented their own songs on the album which attracted a lot of attention again.

This summer the supergroup will come to Europe and UK for some shows. As a prelude to this special moment, Hollywood Vampires release a live album, which includes the recording of a show in Rio de Janeiro.

It was in September 2015, when the band played in front of 100,000 fans in front of the Sugarloaf Mountain. In total, the setlist includes 14 songs; all cover versions. With ‘School’s Out’ and ‘Billion Dollar Babies’ two Alice Cooper songs have also sneaked onto the setlist and they fit perfectly into the context.

‘Live in Rio’ represents on the one hand the spirit of the 70s and on the other hand portrays a modern rock show that is bursting with power. With Perry, Depp and Henriksen on guitar, the outfit has enormous musical firepower, which perfectly matches the unique voice of Alice Cooper.

That songs like ‘Cold Turkey’, ‘Whole Lotta Love’ and ‘Brown Sugar’ belong to the timeless classics is well known and also on this release the sound of those stunning moments in rock enchant the listener.

If you look at the video of the show, you also realize the fun that all participants have while being part of this show. Each of the involved enjoys the moment, the atmosphere and the power of rock’n’roll. The ego takes a back seat here, which creates an euphoria that carries over to the crowd.

In addition, Hollywood Vampires have invited guests. Lzzy Hale delivers all she can on the thundering version of ‘Whole Lotta Love’ and harmonizes with Alice Cooper in perfection. With Andreas Kisser from Sepultura, ‘School’s Out’ gets extra riff power and that ‘Another Brick in the Wall Part 2’ moments are woven in, creates an extra moment of uniqueness.

‘Live in Rio’ is a special moment that was fortunately captured on tape. On this September evening, experience, euphoria and expertise met in Rio. The result is a unique show and you can be excited about the musical fireworks the guys will deliver on this year’s summer tour.
