Review DISCREATION ‘Iron Times’

After Dicreation from Hanau, Germany brought their fifth album ‘End of Days’ to the record stores in 2017, fans of the death metal icons had to wait six years before a new effort from the five metallers is released with ‘Iron Times’.

Discreation, that’s Marc Grewe, Sebastian Schilling, David Hübsch, Martin Engels and Peter Frick. These five guys have established themselves step by step in the German metal underground and underline this position with ‘Iron Times’. Especially the addition of Grewe, who most of you still know from his Morgoth days, suits Discreation very well.

‘Iron Times’ reminds with its massive guitar walls of bands like Bolt Thrower and it’s not surprising that the band pays homage to the heroes with ‘Mercenary’, a felicitous cover version. The power of the guitar riff is mercilessly demonstrated here and there are underlying samples like in ‘Bringer of Demise’ which give the brutal sound of Discreation an extra depth.

Tempo is very present on Discreation’s new record. Right from the title track, which opens the album, it’s obvious that a speed limit has no chance. Discreation pounds the song out of the loudspeaker and tracks like ‘Maschinenkrieg’ are in no way behind.

If you deal with the lyrics of this disc, some of them, like the title track, have unfortunately become very realistic in today’s time due to the war in Ukraine.

‘Iron Times’ is a superbly heavy album. The songs have an apocalyptic aura, are furious and bursting with power. Thundering grooves like in ‘The Battle Rages On’ provide a nice contrast to the thunderous blasts on this record. ‘Iron Times’ is one of the best death metal albums of the German metal scene and deserves to be listened to. But be prepared, because Discreation take no prisoners.
