Review BLACK STAR RIDERS ‘Wrong Side of Paradise’

It was 2012 when Thin Lizzy members Scott Gorham, Damon Johnson, Marco Mendoza and Ricky Warwick started writing new songs. Out of respect for Phil Lynott (R.I.P.) and due to the fact that Darren Wharton and Brian Downey were not interested in recording new music, the quartet started releasing new songs under the moniker of Black Star Riders.

‘All Hell Break Loose’ was the debut album, which was very well received. Driven by the positive feedback, ‘The Killer Instinct’ was published in 2015. Two more records followed and in the meantime it is only Ricky Warwick who is still on board from the initial lineup. The singer and guitarist can also be considered as the driving force, thanks to which a new album is on the way with ‘Wrong Side of Paradise’.

Already in August the world got a first taste. With ‘Better Than Saturday Night’ a new single was released, a song with none other than Def Leppard’s Joe Elliot on background vocals. The tune is representative for the album, as it contains the typical Thin Lizzy / Black Star Riders trademarks. Good melodies, the signature guitar sound and a good portion of groove, that’s what makes the song and album stand out.

Actually, it does not matter at which spot you put the needle. What comes out of the speakers has high quality and catches the ear very well. Recommended is the well done ‘Pay Dirt’ and also the rather melancholic ‘Burning Rome’ can impress.

With ‘Crazy Horses’, originally by The Osmonds, Black Star Riders include a cover version on their newest album. Not too far from the original, the song still has enough of its own identity to fit very well in the context of this record.

‘Wrong Side of Paradise’ puts you in a good mood from start to finish. Black Star Riders rock their way through a total of 11 songs, tunes that show that well-made rock music can spread warmth and a sense of well-being even in times of sterile digitalization.
