Review BIG CITY ‘Testify X’

Big City is the brainchild of Daniel Olaisen. The guitarist and songwriter worked out many song ideas over time and had the plan to record these songs together with some partners in crime. He found with Frank Ørland, Frank Nordeng Røe, Jørgen Bergersen and Miguel Pereira the right contributors for this endeavor and things were ready to go.

Big City is hailing from Norway and their music is mainly influenced by the big hymns and soundscapes from the 80s. Hooks, riffs and melodies are the main characteristics of Big City’s sound. This all means that there is not too much new to discover and at the same time, the quintet offers a blend of good songs that are ear candy. The title track is a perfect representative of their music and sound and hereby a well-chosen name-giver for the album.

The pounding start of ‘Conception’ shows the metal aspect of Big City although the twist towards the melodic rock framework comes rather quickly.

It seems to become a trend that the end of an album is more than just the final track. More and more it’s the extra-long tunes that finish off a longplayer. In this case it a track called ‘How Dark Does it Get’. The seven minutes composition is a summary of everything you got offered earlier and in case you are curious about the sound of this Norwegian outfit, the closer is a good indicator for the lively DNA of Big City.

‘Testify X’ is an album that is vivid and solid. Songs, sound and production are all working together very well and although some of the tracks are real ear candy things never get too sweet and sticky. Fans of melodic rock should give this album a chance.
