Review AMPORHIS ‘Live at Helsinki Ice Hall’

In a time, when joy of heavy metal was a wider experience than listening to vinyls and watching streaming events, Finnish metal veterans Amorphis played a home-game show at Helsinki Ice Hall. The concert took place at December 7th, 2019, a time when the pandemic was already lurking in the East.

It feels like it happened light-years ago, when a cheering crowd celebrated heavy riffing, a hard-hitting beat and excellent vocals, performed live on a big stage. A little help to not forget these great moments is the new live album Amorphis ship to the record stores in mid-May.

The show focussed on the latest longplayer, released by Amorphis. ‘Queen of Time’ contributed with six songs to the setlist, representing the current sound of the band that goes well together with harsher old material. The sextet goes back to ‘Elegy’, released in 1996, with ‘Against Window’ and ‘My Kantele’. Regardless from what era the songs come from, Fans enjoyed it in Helsinki. That is very obvious while listening to this live album.

‘Live at Helsinki Ice Hall’ is a very authentic live album and comes with a very well-done sound too. This release reminds of a time that we all miss heavily and hopefully get back soon. In the meantime, patience is what we all have to show while listening to live albums like ‘Live at Helsinki Ice Hall’.
