Review ZOMBI ‘Liquid Crystal’

The fact that Zombi’s music reminds of a movie soundtrack doesn’t appear out of nowhere. Zombi is very inspired by Italian progressive rock band Goblin that delivered numerous soundtracks with impact.

Zombi, that’s a duo of passionate musicians, hailing from Pittsburgh: Steve Moore and Anthony Paterra. The band premiered with the ‘Cosmos’ album back in 2004, after having signed a deal with Relapse Records. Although the label has some bands in their portfolio that stand for extreme metal, it is Zombi that add a different aspect to the mix.

The duo creates songs, that live by their embedded mood and emotional intensity. Vocals and lyrics aren’t needed here. Zombi manage to catch the listener’s attention by creating a musical soundscape that gives goose-bumps. In a way, the songs remind not only of Goblin but also bring back the soundtrack for ‘Escape From New York’ memories. What’s in common, is the aspect of dystopia and horror, that musically blends into each other on releases like ‘Liquid Crystal’.

The highlight on this five songs comprising EP is called ‘Turning Points’. Starting-off with a sinister prelude the song is emotionally touching with ominous vibes that act as a guiding pattern through these eleven minutes sound exploration. Also using the tool of repetition intensifies the hypnotic character of this tune that can’t be stopped after having pressed the ‘Start’-button.

‘Liquid Crystal’ is a next milestone, Zombi add to their list of achievements. Fans that dig musical intensity, even if no harsh riffs are involved, should check out ‘Liquid Crystal’, an album that in a way also reflects a basic vein of an unreal time in the here and now.
