CD review NAPALM DEATH ‘Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism’

Busy days for bass player Shane Embury. The iconic musician released a few weeks ago with Venemous Concept a new album and now it’s the ‘mothership’ Napalm Death that unveil with ‘Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism’ an extremely powerful sonically strike.

Napalm Death belong to the spearhead of Grindcore. The inventors of a whole new genre of extreme music started back in the very early ’80s and after having reveals some demos the ‘Scum’ album was the spingboard to a career that lasts already since four decades and no end in sight.

In contrary, ‘Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism’ sounds strong and furious. Napalm Death never compromise on the essence of their music. These guys fuse Metal, Hardcore and Punk to a raging melange that comes with corners and edges. Neither nor will be rounded off, a premise also for ‘Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism’.

The album starts furious. ‘Fuck the Factoid’ and ‘Backlash Just Because’ are extremely fast tracks. ‘That Curse of Being a Thrall’ and ‘Fluxing of the Muscle’ puts Metal-influences a bit more into focus while there are songs on the album too, that take a slightly different road. Still reflecting Napalm Death’s non-negociable trademark tracks like ‘Joie De Ne Pas Vivre’ comes with a Post-Punk expression. The song lives without guitars and it’s Embury’s hammering bass guitar that provides the heartbeat for this musical monster. The closer ‘A Bellyful of Salt and Pleen’ is another musical wrecking ball that takes a similar direction, showing the wide range of influences with bands like The Young Gods acting as source of inspiration. Interesting, thrilling and still Napalm Death.

Releasing extreme music for four decades is a decent achievement and keeping the energy alive over such a long time is even more respectable. Napalm Death has literally something to say, especially in times of nationalism and protectionism. Such an environment is the fuel for Napalm Death, addressing the topics in a furious manner by also going deep instead of soley staying at the surface. ‘Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism’ is a blast from start to finish and it feels like all the core elements of Napalm Death’s sound from 40 years fuse on one record – ‘Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism’. This record is system-relevant.
