CD review ONSLAUGHT ‘Generation Antichrist’

Maybe there are more than two consistent factors when it comes to Thrash Metal veterans Onslaught, but constant line-up adjustments is certainly one. Secondly there was always a consistency when it comes to quality. I can’t recall an album of the UK thrashers that disappointed, neither in their first era, nor on the second wave.

Onslaught delivered with ‘The Force’ and ‘In Search of Sanity’ two excellent records in the second half of the ’80s before the guys called it a day in 1991. After their return in 2004 the band added three more longplayers to their delivery list and now ‘Generation Antichrist’ is supposed to continue the Metal assault from the UK.

Onslaught is very much driven these days by founding member Nige Rockett. Bass player Jeff Williams, who joined in 2006, is almost an Onslaught veteran himself in the meantime, but there are also new players in this Thrash Metal adventure. James Perry (d) and Wayne Dorman (g) are aboard since 2018 and the ‘new kid in town’ is singer David Garnett, who joined this year, the latter being a great addition to Onslaught.

Garnett supported the band already earlier, filling in for Sy Keeler during some live shows and obviously made an impression. Having him as singer on the new album adds a lot of firepower to the mix. Garnett has a typical Thrash Metal voice. Harsh, but also melodic in a way and certainly always in control of his singing, the frontman is like an extra power-pack for the UK-thrashers. Comparisons with some Bay Area frontmen isn’t just lala-land.

‘Generation Antichrist’ is a stunning album that I haven’t expected to be that strong. It seems like the guys went through a vitality-gaining period since riffpower and groove are amazing. This ferocious Thrash Metal album is build on an oldschool vibe and still sounds very modern and dynamic. Songs like the title track and ‘All Seeing Eye’ are ruthless Metal hymns that will unfold even better live, I guess. Furthermore there are screaming guitars like on ‘Empires Fall’, while tempo rules on ‘Religiousuicide’.

‘Generation Antichrist’ is hard and heavy, in the best meaning of these words. Furious Thrash Metal from the UK is the result of willpower, passion and dedication, all manifested in eight songs and an intro. Nige Rockett and his bandmates deliver a very strong Thrash Metal album that might be even the best the quintet brought to plate so far. Onslaught challenges the Bay Area with ‘Generation Antichrist’.
