CD review LIONCAGE ‘ Turn Back Time’

(7/10) Lioncage premiered in 2015 with ‘Done at Last’ before they went into studio again two years later to record ‘Second Strike’. Already one year later the third album is in the starting blocks, ready to spread a melodic rock vibe.

The band from Elmshorn, Germany put together a 12 songs tracklist, including songs that are inspired by rock acts like Foreigner and Journey. It’s not the harsh riffing that’s in forefront. Lioncage is actually a quite peaceful predator, if you will. The band ensnares the listener with well-done melodies and catchy hooks. It’s hard not to be fascinated by the harmonies of songs like ‘Black Water’.

While Lioncage makes use of the melodic rock toolkit they don’t fall into the trap of using a cookie-cutter approach. Each of the songs on ‘Turn Back Time’ has a good punch and never gets too soft and lazy. Cool rocking tunes like ‘Blind’ have that certain extra. Even though keyboard passages add the melodic base for some of the tracks there’ still enough guitar power embedded to differentiate them from a pop song with a rock appeal.

This longplayer doesn’t have the potential to set the rock world on fire, but it is also far more than just another melodic hardrock release. Lioncage’s third album gets out of the boxes very well and makes fun from start to end.
