CD review ONKEL TOM ‘Zwischen Emscher & Lippe’

(8/10) Next to getting together a new Sodom line-up Tom Angelripper had some extra time for working on another Onkel Tom release. For the ones of you haven’t heard of Onkel Tom yet, it’s the rock outlet of Sodom’s Tom Angelripper with lyrics very much attached to his native soil. The Ruhrgebiet in Germany is Onkel Tom’s homebase and the songs are mainly about the area, the people and the roots.

After having had a release with drinking songs and another one featuring Christmas carols it’s this EP which is an ode to a specific part of the Ruhrgebiet. ‘Zwischen Emscher & Lippe’ is the area of  Angelripper’s hometown Gelsenkirchen and further North, defined by two rivers – the Emscher river and the Lippe river. Two song that include Schalke 04, the local soccer team, speaks a clear language. But it’s more than solely about soccer. It’s more the connected mindset like the honesty, loyalty and supportive friendship that is addressed throughout.

Three songs of this EP are new ones and it’s an authentic live version of ‘Ruhrpott’ that ends this special release. Onkel Tom is more only a side project of the Sodom frontman. Onkel Tom is a substantial part of Germany’s metal scene and regular shows at e.g. Wacken speaks for themselves.
