neànder is a rather new band, considering their start that dates back to 2017. Within these three years, the Berlin-based band was rather productive with a self-titled debut, shared with the world in 2019. A year later the sophomre release 'eremit' has left the studio and carries another six songs, penned by the German quartet.... Continue Reading →
CD review SCORCHED OAK ‘Withering Earth’
Sometimes good things just come to you. The inbox is full with releases and sometimes it takes a coincident to get to the good stuff. CD review ARROGANZ ‘Morsus’
Since 2008 German Arroganz (OK, that sounds a bit weird) evolve their sound and music, built on despair and rage. Also sounding very authentic the trio debuted in 2011 with "Dark and Deathless' and here comes the next avalanche of evil riffs, reaching is from Cottbus, Germany. 'Morsus' is the title of the new Arroganz... Continue Reading →

CD review ZAKK SABBATH ‘Vertigo’
Covering such a milestone album always includes a higher risk risk of failure. If someone can make such an endeavor to a success it is Zakk Wylde, Blasko and Joey Castillo. Musical capabilities and savvy comes units with a passion for the sound of their idols, the earlier giving the trio the possibility to interpret the music in perfection, that latter allowing the guys to get the right vibe and spirit in place.
CD review DUN RINGILL ‘Library of Death’
Sweden and Doom Metal, that's a combination that works very well, thinking of genre legends like Candlemass, Count Raven and others. Another Doom Metal powerhouse hailing from the North is Dun Ringill. Although the name refers to an Iron Age hill fort, the band has Swedish roots, with some of the musicians being also part... CD review PALE DIVINE ‘Consequence of Time’
25 years in business, that says something about a band and their musical qualities. Pale Divine, hailing from Glen Mills, Pennsylvania, is such a band. Founded in 1995 it took the guys six years to get the debut 'Thunder Perfect Mind' out into the record shops. Having managed the start, was like a springboard for... Continue Reading →

CD review STYGIAN CROWN ‘Stygian Crown’
'Stygian Crown' is a strong debut album, a longplayer that is a statement. These guys came to stay. Modern epic doom metal has to sound exactly like the quintet celebrates it for almost an hour on this album. Very strong.
CD review -(16)- ‘Dream Squasher’
'Dream Squasher' is not for the faint-hearted. Extremely down-tuned guitars create a wall of riffs in grey and cold concrete. This album is a musical monolith that can't be discovered after listening to it. 'Dream Squasher' needs several rounds to unfold its intensity and musical creativity. And after that a little bit of sunlight is surely not bad either.
CD review SORCERER ‘Lamenting Of The Innocent’
That Swedes can compose and play doom metal is nothing new. After all, it was Candlemass who released with 'Nightfall' a reference album which is still the benchmark for every doom metal band today. Piece by piece it is now their Swedish compatriots from Sorcerer who are getting closer to this milestone album. Sorcerer is... Continue Reading →

CD review TYRANT (U.S.) ‘Hereafter’
The importance of live shows and festivals can't be emphasized enough. Not only that these are the moment that bring metal to life, they are also initiator and motivator for some veteran bands to return onstage and maybe more. Tyrant, hailing from Pasadena, California, is one of these bands that had some first heydays in... Continue Reading →
CD review ALKYMIST ‘Sanctuary’
'Sanctuary' is an album, which shines by its intensity. The four danes manage to create sound collages which are dark and melancholic. On the other hand, they also manage to give the whole sound expression a certain lightness every now and then, which makes this longplayer to an interesting journey through varied worlds of gloom. I was impressed by 'Sanctuary' and maybe even a little bit of Danish happiness was spilling over to me.
