(8/10) The first time I heard of Port Noir was three years ago when the guys released with ‘A New Way the Wind Carries’ their cool sophomore longplayer. The next step for me was seeing them live while supporting Pain Of Salvation on their 2017 tour, which brought the band to Leiden. Having played an impressive show there, rose the expectations for their third album.
‘The New Routine’ ends the wait and is the anticipated new album that comes with eleven songs. Sometimes expectations are too high, but not in this case. The Swedish trio delivers an album that is as good is one could think about.
Port Noir doesn’t follow standard paths. The music can be described in a wider meaning as Alternative Rock. What makes Port Noir’ music exciting though is the fusion of different styles and influences. ‘Flawless’, the second track on the album, is a song that represents this very well. There are rock elements, next to almost pop-like moments that are followed by a crossover-ish riff. With ’13’ there’s another tune that follows a similar approach, reminding in parts of Prophets Of Rage.
Being inspired by bands like Rage Against The Machine, Machine Head, Daft Punk and Queens Of the Stone Age shows the variety of impactful sounds on Port Noir’s music of which the atmospheric ‘Young Bloods’ marks another cool landmark.
Port Noir’s third album is a kaleidoscope of sounds and styles. It’s the opposite of ‘one size fits a all’, which is exactly what delivers the excitement.
