(9/10) Dutch singer Anneke van Giersbergen doesn’t need to be introduced. The name is very well known in the fields of rock and metal with van Giersbergen celebrating big success with Dutch prog metal outfit The Gathering.
After having left the band, van Giersbergen’s career continued. Gentle Storm and Vuur are two band the singer started in addition to project contributions and solo releases. The previous work showed a singer with a range of sounds that was always wider than merely rock music and the current release underlines this in a bold way.
‘Symphonized’, the title of the new album, explains very well what fans of the Dutch singer can expect. It was in May this year when van Giersbergen played two special shows in The Netherlands. The concerts were a collaboration of the singer and Resident Orkest of Den Haag and featured a 13 songs comprising setlist. 11 out of these 13 songs build the tracklist of ‘Symphonized’ and capture two special nights.
The songs that have been played that night are partly a retrospective. Tunes like ‘Forgotten’ (The Gathering), ‘Your Glorious Light Will Shine – Helsinki’ (Vuur) and ‘Shores of India’ (The Gentle Storm) are great tunes, stripped down to the essence and arranged for a classic orchestra. Next to these songs it’s cover versions of Lorrainville and Henry Purcell adding richness to the release, an album that includes with ‘Zo Lief’ also an unreleased song in Dutch.
‘Symphonized’ is a special release and it is one of the best ones Anneke van Giersbergen launched so far. The setup of the two shows allows the singer to make use of her entire vocal range in a great fashion. This album is about excellent music, preformed and presented in a passionate and soulful way. Give it a try. It’s more than worth it.
