DVD review AMON AMARTH ‘The Pursuit Of Vikings: 25 Years In The Eye Of The Storm’

(9/10) If not done already, Amon Amarth fans and enthusiasts of melodic Swedish death metal should mark November 16th in red in the calendars. The metal Vikings from the North will release their new documentary/live album that day, a package you shouldn’t miss.

Amon Amarth belongs to the group of bands that constantly gained new and additional fans over more than two decades. Hoarse vocals and growls by Johan Hegg as well as the melodic guitar parts and solo sections are attractive to many metalheads, regardless of what genre you normally prefer.

2018 is a milestone in Amon Amarth history. The band is three decades in business (incl. the first year with the moniker Scum). One of the success factors of such a long and successful time in metal is the constant line-up. 4/5 of Amon Amarth plays together for many years and it’s Joke Wallgren who’s the new kid in town, joining in 2016. This continuity helped the band to get to where they are nowadays – headlining big festivals like Summer Breeze.

‘The Pursuit Of Vikings: 25 Years In The Eye Of The Storm’ is a comprehensive package that’s mainly based on Amon Amarth’s shows at the mentioned Summer Breeze festival in 2017. The quintet played two shows on two consecutive days at the big German metal festival. The first concert was unannounced and smaller, focussing on earlier material while the second night included the entire Amon Amarth Viking setup including fire and sea snake. Both concerts built the base for the DVD/Blu-ray version. The CD instead comes with the second show, featuring Amon Amarth hymns like ‘War of Gods’ and ‘Death in Fire’. A special moment is ‘A Dream That Cannot Be’ with German metal queen Doro Pesch joining the Vikings on stage.

The sound of this release is excellent. It reflects an authentic live atmosphere that is compelling and impressive. With a high level of density Amon Amarth creates a strong wall of sound and if you ever had the chance to see the band on stage you know what I am talking about.

Next to the live recordings the DVD/Blu-ray comes with an extensive documentary. The retrospective comprises of live material as well as ‘behind the scene’ parts. The way the documentary is built up reflects the bands perspective and also fans viewpoint, an approach that outlines the band’s close proximity to fans in a very good way. The great thing with Amon Amarth is, that we are not talking about artist and fans. It’s metalheads that enjoy a metal party.

‘The Pursuit Of Vikings: 25 Years In The Eye Of The Storm’ is a compilation of Amon Amarth, covering their last 25 years in melodic death metal. This release has enough new and exciting stuff for longtime fans of the five Vikings as well as it gives rookies an excellent overview of what the band and fans stand for. ‘Skol’ to the next 25 years of Amon Amarth.
