DVD review LACUNA COIL ‘The 119 Show – Live in London’

(9/10) It was in October 1998 when an Italian metal band entered the Woodhouse Studio in Hagen, Germany with the only aim, which was to record a debut album. The band is called Lacuna Coil and the quintet worked together with no less than Waldemar Sorychta on ‘In a Reverie’. Work was finished successfully and the band premiered in February 1999 and the release was the starting point of an impressive journey.

Lacuna Coil achieved what stays a dream for many other bands. The quintet could constantly increase their fanbase. Already the sophomore album ‘Unleashed Memories’ entered the  German longplayer charts and step by step Lacuna Coil also scored chart positions in countries like the US, UK and Italy.

To celebrate the first outstanding 20 years of Lacuna Coil the band played a one-off show in London earlier this year. Cristina Scabbia and bandmates crafted a 27 songs setlist that covered all the highlights. Songs like ‘Our Truth’ and ‘Heaven’s a Lie’ have been excessively celebrated by fans, the Depeche Mode cover ‘Enjoy the Silence’ has been played too and it was the fabulous ‘Nothing Stands in Our Way’ that rounded off a special show with more than 2 hours of Lacuna Coil on stage.

Next to a well-done selection of Lacuna Coil hits the band also offered a great stage scenery. The Italian quintet invited to a spectacular circus show with a half-open circus tent being the centerpiece. It’s a dark circus show and it’s not the funny clown that’s the main act. It’s creepy made-up dancers, adding a gloom factor to the show and it’s fire, flames and all kinds of additional effects that make this concert to an extraordinary one. A visual highlight is Cristina Scabbia ‘flying’ above the stage, singing ‘Falling’ with the piano as the only companion. Wow.

The good news is, that this special night with Lacuna Coil was recorded and is now available for everybody as DVD, Blu-ray,…. A usual there’s also a ‘Behind the scene’ section, providing more insights about the before and after of the show. Last but not least the comprehensive release gets rounded-off by a long-form interview with the band.

‘The 119 Show – Live in London’ is for sure worth the money. It brings a phenomenal event right to your living rooms, a live performance that’s far more than only a concert.

In case you want to see more of Lacuna Coil, I can report that the band is on tour in Europe right now. It’s ‘The 119 Show Tour’ that brings the electrifying circus show in a reduced setup to many European cities and countries. Having seen the show in Leiden (here are some pics), NL means that I can really recommend to check tour dates and join one of their shows.
