CD review SAXON ‘Denim and Leather’, ‘Power and the Glory’, ‘Crusader’ – re-issues

It’s a lot of Saxon on Markus’ Heavy Music Blog recently. The only reason for it is the fact that there’s a lot of activity in the NWoBHM-legend camp. ‘Thunderbolt’, the newest longplayer, has seen the light of day early this year and the band’s on tour, promoting the new release. This led to two live reports of shows I could witness. It was in February in Tilburg, NL when I saw the current live show and it was a few days ago at RHF 2018 with Biff Byford & Co. being the glorious closer of a three day metal feast

In parallel, the early records of this British powerhouse are shipped to the record shops as re-issues. The first three records have been revealed already some months ago, now followed by ‘Denim and Leather, ‘Power and the Glory’ and ‘Crusader’. As the earlier three re-releases also these ones include, next to the regular songs, some special treats – mainly live recordings and some demo version. The discs are packaged in a well-done deluxe media book, providing lyrics, photos and more.

Saxon_Power The Glory_BMGCAT162LP

Two years later, in 1983, the next studio album hit the shelves – ‘Power and the Glory’. It’s the title track that’s still part of any Saxon show. This album was also the first one with Saxon’s new drummer Nigel Glockler who replaced Pete Gill. Since then Glockler is part of the band and became over time an important band member.

The extra with this re-release isn’t a live recording. This time it’s demo versions from 1982 when the band worked on the new material for ‘Power and the Glory’.

Saxon_Crusader_BMGCAT184LP

The third album of this re-issue series is the legendary ‘Crusader’ release from 1984. For me personally it was this longplayer that opened the doors to one of the most important bands in heavy metal. The title track is a classic and became a solid pillar of any Saxon concert with a chorus, the crowd joins in as a huge choir.

For the first time Saxon did a cover version that ended up on a regular Saxon album. ‘Set Me Free’ is a The Sweet songs which the British quintet shifted to a solid metal track.

Early working versions of some songs are the little extra that comes with this release and what’s really interesting for fans are ‘Helter Skelter’ and ‘Borderline’. Both tunes didn’t make it on the regular album, but are the outcome of the ‘Crusader’-session. The re-release contains both songs.

Tracklist:

1. The Crusader Prelude
2. Crusader
3. A Little Bit Of What You Fancy
4. Sailing To America
5. Set Me Free
6. Just Let Me Rock
7. Bad Boys (Life To Rock N’Roll)
8. Do It All For You
9. Rock City
10. Run For Your Lives
11. Borderline
12. Helter Skelter
13. Crusader
14. Do It All For You
15. A Little Bit Of What You Fancy
16. Sailing To America
17. Just Let Me Rock
18. Do It All For You (Intro) / Run For Your Lives
19. Living For The Weekend
