CD review BLAZE BAYLEY ‘December Wind’

(7/10) Former Wolfsbane and Iron Maiden singer Blaze Bayley is working in his solo career for many years. These two bands have been a springboard for the singer from Birmingham, UK, inspiring his solo release up to date. In total 10 albums saw the light of day and after having finished the second leg of the Full Metal tour Bayley is ready for a new release.

This time it’s a different album. Bayley shares songwriting duties with guitarist Thomas Zwijsen. Zwijsen is known for re-arranging rock and metal songs in classical style, which gives already an idea of where this is going.

‘December Wind’ is the title of Blaze Bayley’s newest longplayer. Next to Bayley and Zwijsen, it is Anne Bakker and her violin that’s part of this release. This trio not only did the album, the three-piece will also embark on a tour to present the new material live on Europe stages. The songs of this release are all classical acoustic ones, including a version of Iron Maiden’s ‘2AM’.

As an extra bonus, the release also carries the 5 tracks of the previous ‘Russian Holiday’ acoustic album with a ten minutes version of Iron Maiden’s ‘Sign of the Cross’.

To conclude: December Wind’ comes with a good ambition and will be appreciated by Bayley fans. I’m doubting though if the album has enough firepower to stick out from the huge amount of releases this year. However, if you’re looking for a Christmas season soundtrack and you’re done with TSO, ‘December Wind’ might add a fresh breeze.
