CD review CLUTCH ‘Book of Bad Desicions’

(9/10) Damn, time flies! ‘Book of Bad Decisions’ is already album number 12 in Clutch’s impressive discography. Obviously the band didn’t take a lot of bad decision in their musical career since otherwise it wouldn’t have been possible to maintain the band and their sound for such a long time, with the new album not being an exception.

The Maryland-based powerhouse delivers with ‘Book of Bad Decisions’ not solely an excellent quality but also some quantity. 15 songs and a playing time of nearly an hour provides a lot of merciless riffs, powerful beats and excellent vocals.

The first songs that was revealed is also the opener of the new longplayer. ‘Gimme the Keys’ is the name of this terrific rocker that includes everything you could ask for. The song’s about the bands first tour back in 1991 and it was in specific a show in Lawrence, Kansas that led to this awesome rocker. What a great start into the album.

‘Book of Bad Decisions’ is an album that is kept together by the spirit of rock’n’roll, manifested by songs like ‘A Good Fire’. Still it includes a lot of variety which makes each of the 15 tunes to real treat. Let’s take the title track as an example. Compared to the straight-forward opener, ‘Book of Bad Decisions’ is more of a mid-tempo groove-based track that shows all the greatness after having listened to it a few times.

To show the entire width of this album it’s a good thing to check out the speedy ‘Vision Quest’. Being different to the title track, ‘Vision Quest’ stands for the raw spirit of rock music that fires on all cylinderswithout any compromise. What’s great with ‘Book of Bad Decisions’ is the fact that Clutch combines so many influences. Next to the power of rock, it’s blues and a solid portion of Southern rock being the base for the extremely well-done ‘Emily Dickinson’. It’s especially this song that shows the ability of Clutch to vary their sound, in this case with a cool outro solo that ends one of the best songs on the album.

‘Book of Bad Desicions’ ends with ‘Lorelei’ which is the nearly six minutes long closer of an album that sums up the fascination of rock music, told in 15 chapters/tracks. ‘Book of Bad Decisions’ is one of the best and most authentic albums I got to hear this year and it for sure will get quite some more spins. Great work.
