CD review GALAXY SPACE MAN ‘Unravel’

(8/10) One of the most vital German cities, Hamburg, is the home base of art rock band Galaxy Space Man. The quartet from the Elbe-city launched their first record ‘…But Heaven is Clear’ in 2013. Positive reactions by media and fans was motivation enough to continue. this exciting journey. Live shows followed and it took a while until the second album has seen the light of day. ‘Unravel’, so the title of the sophomore release, has arrived at records shops and offers 11 new tunes.

The opener ‘Tempest’ became a quite heavy beast. Not that the track is a total knockout, but the intensity of riffs is impressive. What balances these outbursts are calm sections with mainly vocals in the spotlight. It’s this dynamic interaction between loud and soulful that shifts the opener from good to very good.

After having enjoyed this intense wake-up call it’s the beautiful ‘Kal’ that brings back the mentioned art rock vibe. ‘Poles’ doesn’t get much louder even though the band adds more momentum to the tunes. ‘Resting State’ picks it up where the opener ended and belongs to the heavier tunes on this longplayer.

Another song that lives by the dynamics of loud and gentle is ‘Perspective’ and it’s ‘Kaleidoscope’ that’s one of the highlights of this record. The ten minutes masterpiece combines all the band’s key features in one track. It’s a striking song with great instrumental sections and many twists along the way.

If you’re a looking for a combination of complex sounds that are approachable I can recommend ‘Unravel’. The album includes everything you’re looking for and is a great way to spend 55 minutes of your valuable time – again and again.
