Review NAPALM DEATH ‘Resentment is Always Seismic – a final throw of Throes’

‘Resentment is Always Seismic – a final throw of Throes’ is the new mini album by UK-based grindcore pioneers Napalm Death. The eight songs featuring release contains songs from the ‘Throes of Joy in The Jaws Of Defeatism’-session. Already at the time the band purposely recorded these songs with having the release of a mini album in mind. Although the songs go back to 2020 the EP is more than just a release with leftover material that wasn’t good enough for the album. Napalm Death always stands for quality and this record doesn’t change the approach.

The furious ‘Narcissus’ kicks off the mini album and the crushing ‘By Proxy’ is another highspeed attack on the album with Barney Greenway screaming vocals as if there would be no tomorrow. This massive steam hammer is raging track that tears down everything in its way.

Interesting are also the two cover songs that made it on ‘Resentment is Always Seismic – a final throw of Throes’. There is the grooving and very bass-driven ‘People Pie’, originally by SLAB! With unusual background vocals. If you always wanted to know how Napalm Death sounds if they would go for industrial, ‘People Pie’ gives you an impression of what it could sound like.

The second cover song on the album comes from Bad Brains and is a song called ’Don’t Need It’. This song fits with its aggressiveness perfectly into the context of ‘Resentment is Always Seismic – a final throw of Throes’ and is one minute running time the shortest track. ‘Don’t Need It’ hands things over to ‘Resentment is Always Seismic (Dark Sky Burial Dirge)’. Napalm Death use this mini album to also stretch the frames a bit and the closer is perfect example. Lyrics are reduced to just four lines which shows the repetitive approach of this dystopic song. The music takes a similar route which makes the ending of ‘Resentment is Always Seismic – a final throw of Throes’ to a hypnotic message about resentment. There are no frills and distractions. This track is stripped down to its dramatic essence that builds up towards the end.

Napalm Death release with ‘Resentment is Always Seismic – a final throw of Throes’ an excellent in-between mini album. Fans will like what they get offered by the legendary grindcore specialists and with the opportunity to stretch the frames, this EP also allows the band the experiment with some sound twists, without losing ground connection to their roots.
