DVD review FLYING COLORS ‘Third Stage: Live in London’

The inflationary usage of the term ‘supergroup’ is why I’m hesitantly using the expression. In case of Flying Colors though, ‘supergroup’ describes the band in an excellent fashion. There is no other way to summarize a musical powerhouse that includes Steve Morse, Neal Morse, Mike Portnoy, Dave LaRue and Casey McPherson.

The band’s release pattern looks like a studio album that is followed by a live release. Also the weird year of 2020 doesn’t change this pattern. It was last year when ‘Third Degree’ got out of the box very successfully and it was a tour that promoted the album as well as it was a sonic advertisement for excellent Rock music.

‘Third Tour’s the Charm’ was the header of a tour that included nine concerts. The last show of this roadtrip took place on December 14th last year at O2 Shepard’s Bush Empire in London. The shows was recorded to make it also accessible also to fans that couldn’t join on of the event. ‘Third Stage: Live in London’ brings Flying Colors right to your living room as Blu-Ray and various other formats.

The tracklist reflects all the songs performed that night in December in London. In total 15 songs are the base for a nearly two hours concert, filled with excellent Rock music. Each of the three studio releases got a fair share on the setlist, leaning a bit towards the latest achievement ‘Third Degree’ which was represented by six songs.

As expected, the musical performance is jaw-dropping good. Beyond any doubt, each of the five guys knows exactly what to do and the tightness of their musical collaboration is impressive. With the progressive touch Flying Colors add to their music, each of the songs is delight for fans of a stunning musical experience.

What fits perfectly is the location itself. Shepard’s Bush Empire, with its long history, provides the right scenery for a Flying Colors concert. Captured with various cameras ‘Third Stage: Live in London’ doesn’t only include good music but also catches the atmosphere and gives the impression of being part of the show.

‘Third Stage: Live in London’ is an exquisite continuation of what the band started in 2012 when they released their debut. Fans of sophisticated Rock music, that always comes with a good sense for melody too, will value this release that provides nearly 2 hours of stellar music. And just in case this isn’t enough, the earbook format includes with ‘Live @ Morsefest 2019’ even more music to discover.
